Water Street Cafe, with our beautiful mahogany bar—built by frenchman Oliver LeBras—our casual and eclectic atmosphere and warm staff, is a favorite spot among locals.

Nestled in the center of the seaside village of Stonington Borough, we are known for our succulent Oyster Bar, fresh seafood and daily menu that includes Stonington fisherman’s catch of the day and fresh seasonal produce from local and organic farmers.

We are not only the favorite restaurant among locals but are also highly rated by the New York Times, Zagats, Connecticut Magazine and local newspapers throughout Connecticut.

Our simple and fresh New American menu is comprised of Stonington fresh-caught seafood, local farm-grown produce and quality meats. We also offer gluten-free and vegetarian choices.

Our raw bar boasts one of the best selections of oysters around. Not only do we serve the local classics like Stonington Oysters and Ninigret Nectars but also fantastic oysters from the northern waters of Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and delicate and refreshing oysters from the Pacific Northwest.

All of our delectable desserts are house-made and baked fresh daily.

Join us each Sunday from 10 AM to 3 PM for our classic brunch that includes local eggs, pancakes (available gluten-free), seasonal specials and lunch dishes.

Walter Houlihan

CHEF/OWNER

 

Walter grew up in Westchester county New York. His culinary experience began at various restaurants in California and New York and he is an alumnus of the Culinary Institute of America. He was Sous Chef at the Grand Hyatt in NYC before moving on to the United Nations Plaza Hotel. He has cooked for President Nixon, Bebe Rebozo and various dignitaries from the United Nations. Walter returned to the United Nations Plaza Hotel in 1990 as Chef of the Ambassador Grill Restaurant.

Walterʼs culinary persuasion and repertoire is influenced by French and Asian cuisine. He was also a member of the Escoffier Society where he participated in a benefit held at Windows of the World under the auspices of Julia Child. He has received numerous awards and accolades for his impeccable cuisine.

Stephanie Hayes-Houlihan

HOST/OWNER

Stephanie grew up in Europe and the United States, the daughter of Air Force pilot Chuck Hayes. She lived in NYC for 20 years where she worked in the hotel industry. Her focus was primarily in catering sales although she worked in restaurants, where she met and worked with Walter at the Ambassador Grill.

Stephanie started her career in catering at the United Nations Plaza Hotel under the mentoring of June Martinez. She became Banquet Sales Manager at the French owned Parker Meridien Hotel in 1989 and Peter Kalikowʼs Hotel Millennium across from the World Trade Center in 1993. Stephanie speaks English, Italian and Spanish and is a student of environmental studies. Walter and Stephanie were married in NYC in 1990 and have three daughters.
